I blog because it's my outlet. I'm a writer (or a wannabe writer anyway) and when I discovered blogging back in the mid-90s (wasn't called blogging then but I did keep a journal on one of my first website iterations) I knew I'd found the way to write about the crap in my head.
It's not important to me who reads my personal blog. It's nice when people do, but it's more for me to have a record of stuff in my life. It's no different than people who've kept written journals of this sort of thing all their lives. Mine's just electronic and public
For the most part, it's pretty much just friends and family who read it and I'm not completely open on it because I bear in mind things like – don't blog about things that could get you fired. But I do write about events in my life, from the mundane to the pretty cool.
It also took me a long time to figure out a focus for my personal blog. I've been writing one for years but could never decide what I wanted it to be. Do I write movie reviews? Book reviews? Do I write about my family and friends? Myself (but god I'm so boring who would want to read that?) and finally I came to the conclusion that I had to stop thinking about writing for an audience, and just write for myself. Whatever strikes my fancy, be it pics I took on a walk, or a big event in mine or my daughter's life, or a vacation journal (when I get one..)
So basically you could say my blog is a mish mash of 'stuff' and it's mostly only going to be meaningful to people who know me. And I'm cool with that. I just needed an outlet for all that 'stuff' and the blog is perfect.
I think I blog for two main reasons. First, because writing is an important form of expression to me. But secondly (and possibly more importantly) because I spent a long time feeling like I had to hide who I was and the kind of life I'd had; I didn't think it was ok just to be me and thought I constantly had to work out what it was other people wanted me to be. Now though, at last, I feel able to just be myself and say whatever I like. I don't do it specifically to be public, and I may never actually blog on some of the more difficult aspects of my life, but knowing that I'd be happy to do so and happy for anyone in the world to read that (even though no one does!) is a liberating feeling!
Mine started out almost as a microblog – I only posted links and one or two sentence posts; it was just a place to share interesting stuff. Now, I use it to share my thoughts, practice writing and keep in touch with friends in and out of the blogosphere. Like Steph, I've never settled on a theme; it's a mish-mash of all sorts of topics and post styles, and really, I like it that way, it works for me. I do have a couple of themed blogs, but still enjoy the freedom of being able to write about anything on that one.

I blog because SEO is something i love doing my site, andykinsey.com is something of a labour of love and will follow me around for the rest of eternity as will all its content (whether i like it or not!).
I'm off to scotland (as you know) for my placement which will mean a few blog changes, maybe adding a personal section to my blog meaning I can talk about how I feel (maybe a subdomain who knows) and still have my SEO blogs. My SEO blogs really are something i've been proud of and will continue to write over the coming weeks, months and maybe years. Everything I write I believe in, even if that changes over time.
I have to say Andy I love what you are doing on andykinsey.com. I really and honestly do wish you luck on the move to Scotland.
Please do add a personal section, it would be lovely to see how and what you are up to
