I have a question. I have been asked to set up a charity website.
The charity is to support the family of a bomb disposal expert who was killed in Afghanistan.
The person in question was a friend of mine and my boss has tasked me with setting it up. What I don’t want to do is put all the effort in for no interest in one families grief. I am trying to separate the personal involvement and concentrate on the professional.
My question is would people give to a charity set up for a family of one soldier killed in conflict?

I personally wouldn't. I support one charity http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/ and nothing apart from that.
I was under the impression there were charities for the families of soldiers killed though?
I think this is more the regiment the guy belonged to trying to do the best for his family
As with all personal/professional things (I'm often in the same boat as a web designer who does stuff for friends etc) it's a matter of setting boundaries. If you feel you can do it on an emotional level, then the question is professionally what can you do, what can you not do, how much time can you commit, what are your expectations of the client, and so on. Regardless of the emotional involvement, stick firm to those professional conditions, that would be my advice. Get that absolutely clear from the outset and hopefully it goes smoothly.
As for the "for no interest" – sometimes one has to do stuff just because it's the right thing to do. Karma will pay you back in one way or another, I would hope
I think people do contribute to local / individual causes, particularly if the family is well-known or the situation has been well publicised. Think global, act local or something.
Hope that helps
Yes these are the thoughts I was thinking. It is a pain to be put on, but it is also nice to be asked. I think I will just make it a justgiving website and then email the link throughout the org.
In which case I feel that there's no need for it. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's nice to see people wanting to do something, after all many people choose to ignore people with problems, but the world's already bloated with so many charities, what makes this one more worthy than another one?
However, it's your decision and if you've got the time, I'd still set up the site. I can imagine there'll be local interest if he was well known.
I think I will set it up as a justgiving website, then those who knew him can give there. And yes he was very well liked, he is starting to take on a mythical quality here.
I think that this may be a case of looking after your own I suppose, so I think it makes sense as he was one of mine to do it
I must say thank you for the comments they have been so helpful in making me think
That sounds like a very good plan – they get their web site, you get to do it, but you don't feel put upon and the end result is the same = WIN.
I just wanted to say thank you for the comments. Helped me think and make a decision and for that I am very grateful to you
