Today another BBC TV show, The One Show took time out to wax lyrical about Twitter. But I am not sure that this report got the idea of Twitter right. I think it was lazy and a little misleading on what and why Twitter is. Ok it explains the mechanics of Twitter “what are you doing”
My concern is the celebrity element taking over Twitter. By this I mean the UK celebrity element the C’ list celebrity. You only have to watch the embedded video and see Richard Bacon’s primary concern is the numbers of followers that @stephenfry and @wossy have (both respected tweeters by me).
We in the UK tend to Twitter differently to say Twitter users in the USA. I think we tend to be more personal and use it as more of chat and blog advertising place than a network to advance careers etc. Of course that is a sweeping statement and not true for all UK and USA users.
My concern about the UK media coverage of Twitter is that I think most of the UK media don’t get what Twitter is. One media guy explained to me that Twitter is for updating your FaceBook status, so yes he totally got it (insert sarcasm just there).
There are TV shows in the UK that have Twitter just right @workinglunch is one of them. It is a perfect platform for a show with a news agenda. Look at the news networks in the USA, most have Twitter accounts and interact with their Twitter audience.
I love the fact that Twitter is getting UK press but knowing our C’ list celebrities they will turn it into the bastard child of Myspace. They will use it to brag about “look I have more followers than you” etc.
Tech changes and evolves into something that the creator of that tech never imagined or intended. Twitter has evolved way beyond what it was originally intended for, it has spawned many apps and offshoots.
Twitter is a very personal thing to each of us tweeters, I just hope that the way certain TV shows in the UK are reporting on it does not turn it into the previously mentioned bastard child of Myspace.
I love Twitter and really hope our C’ list celebrities in the UK don’t fuck up our warm place
Watch the BBC The One Show report on Twitter and see if you have the same concerns as me.
I agree that the presenters here don't *quite* have the point of Twitter, but they're getting there. I disagree with Bacon about the popularity contest thing among celebs, at least for Twitterers like @stephenfry – who incidentally "gets" Twitter perfectly. Actually UK journalists looking to do pieces like this on twitter could stand to follow him for a while and see how it's done.
Having said that, Twitter is what you make of it. My coworker was waxing on 'What's the point of social media' and things like Twitter, and I told him that it is what it is, and it's how you use it that makes your experience worthwhile or complete waste of time. If you approach it negatively, you will have a negative experience. If you take the time to look into it, learn about it, watch others and then jump in, then it's more than likely your experience will be great and you'll be hooked.
I'll shut up now, except to say this is a good post though, very thought-provoking.
But isn't the point of twitter that you can "follow" who interests you. If you don't like, or are not interested, in the "C-list" celebrities then don't follow them. I too am aware of some twitterers who tend mainly to try and attract the attention of said celebs, but if that is what they get from twitter then good luck to them. If it were to become too annoying I too would probably "unfollow" them.
That is the great thing about twitter it is one thing to a business, news media or blogger like yourself but something else to others, like celebs or general joes (of which I see mayself as one) who never really got involved in such things before twitter. I too am really pleased when I get a @reply from a celeb, but understand with the amount of followers they now have this will be increasingly rare.
Twitters popularity and the "followers" chart are just part and parcel of it. Whether it become too impersonal by the shear amount of users will yet be seen, but I think we all make it what it is not just the celebs or the tv coverage of it.
